You create multiple paths when drawing a shape or object in Illustrator. These paths can be modified or moved after creation. When you’re satisfied with the placement and shape of a path, you can join two anchors illustrator or merge it with another path to create a single, unbroken line. Two paths in Illustrator can be linked together in one of two ways: using the pen tool to manually connect them or using the direct selection tool to automatically create a link between them.

  Pen Tool

1 Click the Pen tool icon on the toolbar.

2 Hover the pen tool cursor over the end point of the first path until the add path symbol appears under the cursor. Click on the end point.

3 Hover the pen tool cursor over the end point of the second path until the merge symbol appears under the cursor. Click on the end point. Both end points are now linked. Repeat the steps for each end point that you wish to link together.

  Direct Selection Tool

1 Click the “Direct Selection Tool” icon on the toolbar.

2 Click the end point of the first path that you wish to link.

3 Press and hold the “Shift” key. Click on the end point of the second path that you wish to link and then release the “Shift” key.

4 Click “Object,” “Path” and “Join.” You can also press the “Connect selected end points” icon in the top menu bar.

5 Repeat the steps for each pair of end points that you wish to connect.
