For the inventive renovation of her family’s New York City home, decorator Alexa Hampton reworked the entire floor plan, including the apartment next door (which she and her husband purchased in 2013). Shown here is the family room after the renovation.

“I wanted to have different types of artwork for the family room and living room. The family room got very colorful walls, so I wanted to keep my uncolorful art in there. Prints, photos, heliogravures. I also wanted a sharper-looking coffee table and color pops on the sofa.”

“In the living room, which was part of the newly acquired apartment, we pulled the stairs forward and created a jib door that leads to the master suite. We also installed all new molding, smoothed the soffit, built bookcases, and replaced the mantel.”

“My formerly awesome bedroom became my new awesome—and first ever—green dining room. I miss a bedroom this big, but it was always a bit over the top anyway. Also, I never lit a fire in the fireplace in the white bedroom—but I will now.”

“We enlarged my daughter’s room by stealing 30 inches of the guest bedroom to create enormous closets, an alcove for a queen-size bed, and more floor space on which to play. We painted the room two tones of green using a glued-on Michael Smith tape trim as our faux chair rail. The inside of the alcove is a grid of suede squares.”

“Our bedroom was created out of the master bedroom of the new apartment. We coffered the ceiling and added rosettes to the center of each coffer. We then added a ticking fabric on the flats of the ceiling.”
