A kidney-shaped pool featuring an abstract sculpture by Adaline Kent is a centerpiece at the Donnell Garden, in Sonoma, California. Located on the site of a former cattle ranch, the garden—also known as El Novillero—was created for Jean and Dewey Donnell in 1948 by landscape architect Thomas Church.

In 1961 Pablo Picasso painted and signed the bottom of the pool at Villa El Martinete, the Marbella, Spain, residence of his friend, celebrated flamenco dancer and actor Antonio Ruiz Soler. The property is now for sale by the real-estate firm Savills .

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld created a constellation of lights on the bottom of a pool at Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo in Monaco, and designed the 65-foot poolside mural, inspired by The Iliad and The Odyssey. The piece, comprised of photographs etched on glass panels, is also the backdrop for a restaurant overseen by legendary French chef Joël Robuchon.
