Introduction

The so-called cleaner is a magic tool. When we’re out cleaning our homes with it, it’s easy to forget the need for the mopping cart and water jug. And it has a surprising knack for tracking itself around your house. It brushes away up to 16cm of dirt - a substantial amount even compared with some commercially available vacuums - with ease. Design Editor Chris Allison has picked its top cleaner cleaner of 2016. The Omnitor R2 vacuum cleaner has an incredibly easy mapping system for cleaning up a varied collection of knickknacks, such as cereal bowls, coffee cups and candle wax. According to the manufacturer, dustbin refills after a mere two hours, using software, as well as product controls (such as Wi-Fi, app control, and battery reset), and the latest onboard-control system lets you control three modes: Auto, Spot, Roomba, Clean and Eco. Connect a docking station to your phone or tablet or even other devices and you can set the stylus to auto-clean, set it to Spot and set its sensors to check under tables, along those of your furniture and in other places. During testing, we found the Deebot 955’s app was very responsive and intuitive, but its settings can be confusing. In order to start a clean and seek out the ideal room to finish one job, you’ll need a separate voice prompt for a start or finish.

Are robot vacuum cleaners any good?

There are plenty of cheaper options available online, and the best models really can save you the trouble of having to manually clean your home. Here’s our independent lab testing of different robot vacuums. If you need a cheap, simple vacuum cleaner, check out the Best Buy RoboVac 11s (in our labs). Our tests reveal whether a robot is quick and easy to use and connected to a smartphone. There are a few general mistracking-type robot cleaners on the market, but they’re generally pretty pricey, so don’t buy if you’re wary of them getting stuck in cracks, crevices or other stubborn spots during cleaning. Check out our Roborock S4 Max floor-care review to see how it copes on hard floors. We also tested two models with more power – one in a £299 iRobot Roomba 690 and another in the £199 Max E7. How we uncover the best robot vacuum cleaners

When it comes to surveying the properties of your floors and making sure they look spotless, our tests aim to fill the critical gap of where each robot could find fault by using an independent survey, whether that’s to find out which vacuum’s motor is quieter and/or more efficient, and if this is where the vacuum should head to make sure it’s not letting itself down. That’s exactly what we ask our robot-vacuum reviewers to do during our clearing phase. Our figures for uneven surfaces can vary wildly between one vacuum and the next, which is why we always refer to our scores for cleaning in a vacuumical vacuum with an empty dust container. As well as assessing cleaning performance and how easy the vac’s mapping the room is, we apply an accompanying checklist of factors such as battery life, iPerformance – which measures how long it takes to clean each room – being able to remember the floor plan and time it took for the vacuum to achieve a complete clean and our tests across various levels of cleaning. Setup and usage

An electric box seldom comes installed in a home’s wall – or instead in the remote control as in our DIY robot vacuum. These have no obvious triggers or buttons where you need to begin cleaning, so they are not a screaming headache to setup and use, especially if you fully setup your vacuum on your own floor. With an installer on duty you don’t need much assistance with the key components as you’ll only have to get the supplied Clean button out to control the Roomba or iRobot robot. Once the box is fully charged, either way it’s a simple affair to install (with part of the manual included) but it really could be a big help to have a large space to work within. They come with small two-pronged brushes with optional brushes and crevice tools like a paddle toy. You could also manually attach attachments to the cleaner and remove any dirt on a particular surface, but that’s not advice we recommend you choose. Our cleanup demo on this Roborock model took around 15 minutes to complete and included lots of detangling to reach deeper into the carpet where needed. Use the remote if you’d rather not clean to add volume, if it takes a while to clean a room or structure, or if they’re just getting dirty. There are a number of modes to decide which ones are best for your house. We found that it was easy to use up to four different cleaning modes with two to three hours of run time. The default mode is the Clean mode which produces a single stream of data or information that alerts the sensor on the app to when you’re not nearby. In Standard mode, the first option is to empty the water tank. Then, control the cleaning robot over your phone or tablet.

Bottom line

As far as household robots go, this is the best. It’s just not cheap, but at less than $300 it will certainly change your life when it is finally ready to go. At that price the V9 robot comes a full price below the iRobot Roomba. In our test, it excelled at both collecting and mopping pet hair including dust but it wasn’t quite as good at vacuuming carpets and hair from hard floors. Ultimately, however, its single-purpose job is to clean your floors and it should do it on your terms as you would a regular home vacuum. You’ll certainly see upgrades with newer models, such as better mapping and larger maps, so you’ll be able to know exactly where it cleans, and when you’ve got plenty of room to maneuver. If you have pets, you might want to save your money for a better version of some of the newer versions of these vacuum cleaners.
