As we welcome the new year, we’re also looking back on this past year in design—to the trends we want to see more of, and to others we’re more than ready to say goodbye to. Here are 5 trends from 2017 that are starting to feel a bit tired.
All White Everything
White, and often only white, has been the hue that’s dominated interiors for a long, long time now. In 2018, we’re feeling a change: bolder colors, and lots of them. And you don’t have to go too crazy to embrace this new trend: just a few colorful accessories, or a small but bold accent wall, will do the trick.
All Midcentury Modern Everything
Look, there’s a reason midcentury modern furniture is so popular : it has clean, elegant lines, it works well in smaller apartments, it’s relatively easy to find. But that time capsule look, the one where your living room looks like a set from Mad Men, has started to feel a little dated. This isn’t to say that you should get rid of your MCM pieces — just mix them up with antiques and newer pieces for a look that’s more varied and personalized.
Hyper Minimalism
A room with a concrete floor and a single Bertoia bird chair may look great in pictures, but what looks great in pictures and what feels great to live with can be very different. Warm up your space with some texture, or plants, or maybe a rug, because nobody wants to live in a museum.
Hyper-referential Word Art
Do you really need a set of wooden letters that says EAT to remind you of what to do in your dining room? No, you do not.
Not Doing What Works for You
Look, in the end, it’s your space, and you should do what you want with it. Trends are fun, style is fun, and getting new ideas from websites like this one is fun, but ultimately you should be doing what works for you and what makes you happy—even if that’s an all-white kitchen crowned with marquee letters that spell EAT. Don’t be afraid to make 2018 the year you make your space really work for you, because that’s what true style is all about.
